Since cities now influence the culture and values of the world more than ever, the single most effective way for Christians to influence the culture of a nation is to have large numbers of them just stay in cities and simply ‘be there church’ there.

Dr. Timothy Keller, “Center Church”

Statistically, the influencers of the world (much less the world’s population itself) is disproportionately living in major cities while American Evangelicals are disproportionately outside of urban areas. James Montgomery Boice suggests that the American Church should intentionally consider Nehemiah 11.1-2 and the call for Israel to repopulate Jerusalem with 10% of its people.

Something to think about.

Let’s take a minute and consider the term “gift” and the gift giver.  After all, gift giving is an important aspect of the Christmas holidays, no matter whether you do it for secular or sacred reasons.
I was considering Christmas in light of a story that was shared in church a couple of weeks ago.  In the midst of the pondering, a piece of scripture came to mind.  It is Matthew 7:11 which says, “If you, then, though you are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”  First off, this is Jesus speaking.  Second, my immediate thought was, God is good!  That is right.  He is!  However, one can not get away from the contrast that Jesus is making here, which is ‘us’ and God.  We are, by nature evil, and God is by nature good, meaning we are more like the Stalin’s and Mussolini’s of the world than we are like God.  Obviously, the focus of this verse is not us but God.  He does this to illuminate the reality that God is good beyond all measure.  The proof of this reality was being played out in that very moment.  The One whose very words spoke this truth, was God incarnate, Jesus Christ, the son of God.  He was sent to ransom men/women back to God.  While in our evilness and running from God, he chased us down, calling out “Here I am, standing at your door that any who hear my voice and let me in, I will come in and dine with him and he with Me.”  So, Jesus, the gift of grace, is the greatest gift ever given.
So, during the next couple of days, if you have time, would you take time to ponder Matthew 7:11 in light of Christmas?
Merry Christmas!

Ugandan Chess Star

I wanted to share this wonderful story told by the folks at Silent Images.  I also want to share a message from David Johnson, who is the founder of Silent Images, to the non-profit’s supporters.

“Silent Images’ documentary on Phiona, the chess queens of Uganda, appeared on the front page of CNN today!  When we shot this story 2 years ago, we never dreamt it would explode into this!  Thank you for all of you who donate to Silent Images and help us get stories like this out there. We pray this raises awareness to millions about how God is working in the slums of Uganda and the potential that lies within every child.

Grateful for you, David

Christ Is The End of Ethnocentrism

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart for the very reason that the pursuit of this, with Jesus as the answer, is a worthwhile endeavor.  Why?  Because it no longer is about us.  In his book ‘Bloodlines’, John Piper points out “probably no passage in Scripture is clearer than Ephesians 2:11-22 that horizontal reconciliation between alienated peoples happens through vertical reconciliation with God through the blood of Christ.”

Anything pursuit of racial harmony, whether it be a fight against racism, falls short if the gospel of Christ is not the solution.

More to follow on this subject.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

Compassion International:  Love this!!!  Andy Hunter, my favorite Electronica DJ, gets to meet the child he sponsors through Compassion.  What a great privilege.  Though I sponsor a child through World Vision, both Compassion and World Vision are incredible organizations.  I highly recommend taking a step to sponsor a child whether through Compassion or World Vision.
